St Rufino d' Arce (19th August)

According to a late legend, this St Rufino  (known in Assisi as San Rufinuccio) was a young cleric who refused to refused to perjure himself in defence of a priest charged with bad behaviour.  He was subsequently thrown into a well at Arce, on the plain outside Assisi.  Monks from the Abbazia di San Benedetto on Monte Subasio saw a light that proved to be coming from the well, and when they investigated further they found the body surrounded by water lilies.  The word "veritas" was inscribed on one of the petals, proving the truth of his testimony.

The year 1286 is traditionally given as the date of the murder of the young cleric, but the small church of San Rufino d' Arce was first documented in 1217.
