Around Foligno

Hike from Belfiore to Foligno

Take the morning bus to Belfiore: line 58 leaves Foligno station at 09:03 (as at June 2008) and arrives at Belfiore (the end of the route) at 09:25.

Turn left (facing away from Foligno) up Via Altolina.  Turn left at the bridge and continue to the end of the tarmac.  Two paths continue from this point and you have a choice:

  • the path on the left is a short cut to the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Giacobbe; continue to the point at which it forks and left again up to the sanctuary.  Return to the point at which the path forked  and turn left along the other path, which leads into Pale.

  • the path on the right follows the Menotre river (with a succession of waterfalls) into Pale.   If you take this alternative, you can still visit Santa Maria di Giacobbe: at the fountain in Pale, turn left along Via dell' Eremo and continue up the path (with railed steps in places) to the sanctuary.  Then retrace your steps into Pale.

Santa Maria di Giacobbe is located on the slope of the Sasso di Pale.   A sanctuary on an artificial terrace at its summit that was in use in pre-Roman times was monumentalised in the 3rd century BC.  Terracotta antefixes from this period are exhibited in Room 1 of the Museo Archeologico, Foligno.

Turn right in Pale down the road, with the Menotre on the left, to the SS77 (the main road to Foligno).

Cross the road and take the path opposite, which climbs for about 30 minutes and then flattens.  After another hour, the Abbazia di Sassovivo comes into view.  Turn right at the end of the path along the road that leads to Uppello: you will soon see the Cripta di Beato Alano (see the page on Sassovivo) on your left and the entrance to the abbey 100 m beyond.

On leaving the abbey, retrace your steps along the Uppello road and take the path on the left, which offers an alternative route to Uppello.  Pass the viewpoint back to the abbey and continue through the woods.  Then climb the hill, turn left along a track, left at the T-junction along another track, and left at the end along the road into Uppello.  You can end the walk here: bus 57 leaves Uppello at 16:40 (as at June 2008) and arrives at Foligno, Porta Romana (see Walk I) at 16:55.

However, you can easily walk back to Foligno.  Continue along the road to the junction with Via Sassovivo and turn right along it.

If you want to visit San Bartolomeo di Marano (which is also possible as part of Walk III), turn right at the T-junction and left along Via Paoluccio Trinci to the entrance to the church.  Then retrace your steps along Via Paoluccio Trinci and turn left along Via Sassovivo.

Take the path to the left by some tall iron gates, just before you reach the busy main road.  This takes you under a slip road, over the main road and under another slip road.  Turn left at the end of the lane and left again into Via di Chienti.  The road becomes Via Piave: stay on the left and follow it under two railway lines into Via Garibaldi and Porta San Felicianetto (see Walk I), where the walk ends.
