San Michele Arcangelo (15th century)

Gavelli

This church was built on the site of a more ancient chapel.

Giovanni di Pietro (Lo Spagna) and his workshop executed frescoes for the church in two campaigns (see below):

  • those in the apse and the Cappella di San Sebastiano (in the 4th bay on the left) in 1518; and
  • those in the Cappella di San Girolamo (in the 1st bay on the left) in 1523.

All of these frescoes have recently been restored.

Frescoes in the apse (1518)

These frescoes depict:

  • the Coronation of the Virgin (in the hemispherical vault);

  • SS Peter and Paul (on the left);

  • St Michael kills the devil (at the centre);

  • the apparition of St Michael on Monte Gargano (on the right).

Frescoes in the Cappella di San Sebastiano (1518)

This fresco depicts the Madonna and Child in glory with SS Sebastian, Catherine of Alexandria, Apollonia and John the Baptist.

Frescoes in the Cappella di San Girolamo (1523)

This badly damaged fresco depicts the Madonna and Child in glory with SS Jerome, Francis and Antony of Padua.
