Trevi Walk: Detour I
From Santa Chiara to the
Madonna delle Lacrime and Piazza Garibaldi
This detour begins at Santa Chiara (see the walk around Trevi).
Walk down Via dei Monasteri to Porta San Fabiano (1264).
The vestiges of the church of San Fabiano can be seen just beyond it.
San Fabiano (12th century)The monastery here was originally dependent upon Fonte Avellana, outside Gubbio. Pope Gregory XIII transferred it to the Apostolic Dataria ( one of the offices of the Curia) in the late 16th century. The community drew its priors from the most important families of Trevi until 1676, when Pope Clement X sent his own choice of Crispolto Paolelli. He found the church to be abandoned and derelict and he transferred its parish responsibilities to Santa Maria in Sion (see the walk around Trevi). The complex was finally demolished in the early 20th century. |

Retrace your steps and walk through the Porta San Fabiano, past the Chiesetta di Sant' Antonio da Padova on the right.
Sant' Antonio da Padova (13th century)The small church here, which was originally dedicated as SS Cosimo e Damiano, passed to a community of Franciscan tertiaries in 1641. They built a hospice in the adjacent orchard. They also changed the dedication of the complex. Pope Innocent X suppressed the community in 1651. The church was united with that of Santa Maria in Sion (see the Trevi walk) two years later. |

Follow the main road down, with lovely views of Santa Lucia above on the right.
You will soon see the imposing façade of Madonna delle Lacrime below. A path to the right cuts across the last sharp bend in the road and takes you directly to the church (about 1 km from the start of the detour).
When you leave the church, walk up towards the city, pass the road to the left signed to Santa Lucia and take the next left. This winds steeply up to to Porta della Strada Nuova (signed to Hotel Trevi). Take the fork to the right, just before this gate, which leads to Porta del Cieco.
Turn right just before the gate and follow the walls back to Piazza Garibaldi (about 700m from the church).
Return to the walk around Trevi.
