Blessed Paolino Bigazzini
Paolino Bigazzini, who belonged to
a noble family of Perugia, was one of the first followers of St
Sylvester Gozzolini (the founder of the Sylvestrines). He founded the
Monastero dei SS Marco e Lucia del Sambuco on family land near Gubbio
in ca. 1260 and died there in ca. 1280. His relics became the focus
of a cult.
This monastery was abandoned in the 15th century and the
Sylvestrines translated the relics to their new church in Perugia, Santa Maria Nuova, which led to an upsurge of the cult.
Despite the fact that Paolino Bigazzini was never canonised, his feast (4th May) was
celebrated in Perugia in the 15th century.
The Sylvestrines did not
take the relics with them when they left in ca. 1540. The Servites
(who took over the church) neglected them and they were therefore translated at some point to the
Duomo. [Where are they now??]
