Assisi

Please, please stay at least one night in Assisi, rather than joining the hordes of day trippers. There is much to interest you, even after you have fully explored the splendours of San Francesco.
You can reach the city by train from Rome, although you will probably have to change at Foligno. The station, at Santa Maria degli Angeli, is about 15 minutes by taxi from the centre. Alternatively, there is a bus (Sulga) direct to the city centre from the airport (Roma Fiumicino). There are frequent bus and train links between Assisi and nearby Perugia.
There are lots of hotels in the city. I can recommend:
Hotel Umbra, right in the city centre;
Hotel San Francesco, overlooking San Francesco; and
Residenza San Crispino, once the home of a succession of confraternities and now adapted to provide seven holiday apartments.
My favourite restaurant in Assisi is Ristorante Taverna De L'Arco Da Bino at 8 Via San Gregorio. Caffé Duomo, 5 Piazza San Rufino is a good internet café.
