San Nicolò (13th century)

(later San Giorgio dei Tessitori, now demolished)

The church of San Nicolò functioned as a parish church until 1628. when the parish was suppressed.

The church was then re-dedicated as San Giorgio, the patron saint of Genoa and of the Compagnia dei Tessitori, a guild of Genoese weavers.  The guild had been established here in 1575 and continued to use the church until its demolition in 1878.

Frescoes (1498)

Three damaged frescos were detached in 1878 just before the church was demolished to make way for the Istituto di Pena Maschile.  The frescoes are dated by inscription and attributed to Fiorenzo di Lorenzo.

One depicting the mystic marriage of St Catherine, with St Nicholas of Bari is exhibited in the Galleria Nazionale (Room 24).

The other two, which depict:

  • the Nativity, in which  the new born baby Jesus lies naked in a meadow in front of the stable, venerated by the kneeling Virgin and St Joseph; and
  • figures of SS Sebastian, Francis and John the Baptist.
are in the deposit of the gallery.
