Outside Narni

Acquedotto della Formina (24 - 33 AD)

[Describe the route]

Marcus Cocceius Nerva of Narni, who was the father or perhaps the grandfather of the future Emperor Marcus Cocceius Nerva (96-8 AD), built this aqueduct, which remained in use until 1924.  Most of it is underground, but the bridge known as Ponte Cardona (towards Sant’ Urbano) survives from the overground part of the structure.  This is considered to be the geographic centre of Italy.

The bridge and (by prior arrangement) the underground stretch of the aqueduct can be visited with Narni Sotterranea, and an exhibition devoted to this impressive piece of engineering can be seen during a visit under their auspices to Sant' Angelo.
